What Is Thermal Paper?

Thermal paper is paper coated with a chemical layer that turns black when heated. Receipt printers use a thermal print head to apply precise heat, producing text and images without ink or toner.

The coating is sensitive to heat, light, and friction, which is why old receipts fade or turn blank. That fragility is part of the aesthetic: music receipts copy thermal paper to feel ephemeral, personal, and a little nostalgic.

Most POS rolls are 57–80mm wide phenol-free thermal stock. The narrow column shaped the entire receipt aesthetic.

EXAMPLE

A Spotify receipt printed on thermal paper: monospace type, serrated edges, barcode at the bottom. Fades in a few years — like the listening habit it captured.

FAQ
