Receipt vs Invoice — What’s the Difference?

A receipt is proof of a completed payment: it records what was bought, when, and that the balance is settled. An invoice is a request for payment: it states what is owed, by whom, and by when.

The direction of money is the whole distinction. Invoices flow before payment (please pay), receipts flow after (paid, thanks). Novelty generators like music receipts borrow the receipt side — the settled, keepsake side — because nobody frames a payment request.

Small businesses often blur the two: a “paid” invoice email doubles as a receipt. For novelty purposes the receipt always wins — settled totals feel celebratory, outstanding balances feel like chores.

EXAMPLE

Restaurant bill before paying: invoice-like. The slip stapled to the takeout bag after paying: a receipt.

FAQ

Can one document be both?

A paid invoice marked “paid” functions as a receipt, but strict bookkeeping keeps them separate.

Which do music generators copy?

Receipts — the settled-bill format with line items and a total, rendered for sharing.
